In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Arnett said he finds public speculation about his personal life more amusing than upsetting. “People think that they know,” he said. “Over the years, I’ve read so many opinions people have. It’s f---ing hilarious to me how much stuff is just made up, and they have zero idea.”
Arnett and Poehler spent more than a decade together, both personally and professionally. They began dating in 2000, married in 2003, and share two sons — Archie, 17, and Abel, 15. The couple separated in 2012 but have remained close friends and committed co-parents ever since.
According to Arnett, that ongoing closeness is exactly why rumors of tension or conflict feel so far off the mark. “It’s like, ‘Oh, you think you know what my life is?’” he said.
Arnett also acknowledged that public curiosity comes with fame, especially after his breakout role as Gob Bluth on Arrested Development. “It’s part of celebrity culture that we all participate in,” he said, adding that being well known has largely been a positive experience for him.
One thing Arnett and Poehler have consistently avoided since their split is speaking badly about each other — as former partners or as parents. Instead, they’ve often praised one another publicly for how they’ve handled raising their children.
That mutual respect was on full display earlier this year when Poehler made a surprise appearance on Arnett’s Smartless podcast. Invited by cohosts Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes, Poehler joined Arnett for a candid, unscheduled conversation about parenting and life after divorce.
During the episode, Arnett said he was “really proud” of their co-parenting relationship. “I’m also very proud of, certainly as parents, what we’ve been able to do,” he said. “That has been really important to both of us. I’m really, really lucky to have her as a partner in this way.”
Poehler echoed the supportive tone, sharing a simple parenting tip she once read: when your child tells you something, just repeat it back to them. “They say, ‘I had a bad day in math,’ and then you go, ‘You had a bad day in math,’” she explained. “That’s all you say.”
Throughout their relationship and even after their breakup, Arnett and Poehler continued to work together. They appeared in films like Blades of Glory, guested on each other’s shows — Parks and Recreation and Arrested Development — and reunited on the 2020 Canadian COVID benefit Stronger Together, Tous Ensemble.
Both have since moved on romantically. Poehler is now dating former New York Times editor Joel Lovell, while Arnett is in a relationship with businesswoman Alessandra Brawn, with whom he shares a child.
Despite new chapters in their lives, Arnett made one thing clear: the story of his relationship with Amy Poehler belongs to them — not the internet.
