Fox appears in the trailer sitting in the waiting room of a medical facility next to Dr. Paul Rhoades, played by Harrison Ford. The scene quickly shows the show’s signature mix of humor and heart.
“What are you in for?” Fox’s character asks.
“Parkinson’s. You?” Paul replies.
“Just a haircut,” Fox deadpans — and the two share a laugh.
Ford’s character has been living with Parkinson’s since the first season of Shrinking. Early on, Paul tried to hide his condition, but the series has gradually shown him confronting the reality of the disease. Fox’s appearance adds extra weight to that storyline, given the actor’s real-life journey with Parkinson’s.
Fox’s casting, announced in May, also marks a reunion with series co-creator Bill Lawrence. Fox previously starred in Lawrence’s ABC sitcom Spin City for four seasons before leaving the show in 2000 due to Parkinson’s-related challenges. He also had a memorable guest role on Scrubs, another Lawrence creation.
The trailer doesn’t stop there. It also highlights a long-awaited reunion between series star and co-creator Jason Segel and his How I Met Your Mother co-star Cobie Smulders. Smulders plays Sofi, Jimmy’s new love interest, after first appearing briefly in Season 2.
In one scene, Sofi drops by Jimmy’s house and leaves, only for Liz (Christa Miller), Derek (Ted McGinley), and Sean (Luke Tennie) to call Jimmy out for not asking her on a proper date. Meanwhile, Jimmy is also dealing with bigger emotions as his daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell) prepares to head off to college.
With heartfelt performances, familiar faces, and honest storytelling, the Season 3 trailer makes it clear that Shrinking is leaning even further into what it does best — finding humor, connection, and hope in life’s hardest moments.
