By the time director Steven Spielberg and filmmaker Robert Zemeckis were preparing Back to the Future, Hardin already had an impressive résumé. She had led her own NBC Saturday morning kids’ show, appeared on Little House on the Prairie, and starred in several films. Landing the role of Jennifer Parker, the girlfriend of Marty McFly, felt like the breakthrough that would change everything.
Hardin had already filmed several weeks opposite Eric Stoltz, who was originally cast as Marty. Then came the shocking decision to replace Stoltz with Family Ties star Michael J. Fox. Soon after, Hardin learned she was being replaced too.
“Back to the Future was a huge disappointment,” Hardin said in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I was 17. I burst into tears. It was very sad.”
Fox himself has spoken about how sudden the recasting was. In his memoir Future Boy, he explains that he was the first choice for Marty, but was initially unavailable because of Family Ties. Once the filmmakers decided Stoltz wasn’t the right fit, Fox was rushed into the role six weeks into shooting.
For Hardin, the reason she lost her part was especially painful. She later revealed that studio executives felt it would be “emasculating” for the lead actor to appear with a woman taller than him. Fox was several inches shorter than Hardin, and that sealed her fate.
Looking back, Hardin has made peace with it. “If I had done it, everything would have gone in a different way,” she said. “I wouldn’t have done The Office.”
The role of Jennifer Parker eventually went to Claudia Wells, who was later replaced by Elisabeth Shue in Back to the Future Part II and Back to the Future Part III.
Hardin also recalls other near-misses, including losing the lead child role in Shoot the Moon and coming close to starring in a Joan of Arc film that never got made.
Despite all that, Hardin believes failure is part of surviving in Hollywood. “To be where I am, you have to have failed more than you’ve succeeded,” she said. “Failure doesn’t mean anything about you. You just have to fail better.”
Those setbacks eventually led her to memorable work on Dirty Dancing, Absolute Power, Monk, and, most famously, her unforgettable performance as Jan Levinson on The Office.
For Hardin, losing Back to the Future was heartbreaking — but it also helped shape the career that made her a fan favorite.
