Kristin Davis Opens Up About Awkward Sex Scenes on Sex and the City

Kristin Davis may be a veteran of filming romantic scenes, but that doesn’t mean every moment on set was easy.

The actress, who played Charlotte York on Sex and the City, recently reflected on some uncomfortable experiences while rewatching the series on her Are You a Charlotte? podcast. Davis co-hosts the show as she revisits episodes alongside memories from the iconic HBO run and her time working with Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kim Cattrall.

During a recent episode, Davis was asked whether she’d ever dealt with strange or awkward situations while filming intimate scenes. That question sparked a candid conversation about moments she’d rather forget. One scene in particular involved a co-star whose breath was overwhelmed by mints before filming, making Davis eager for the scene to end as quickly as possible. She admitted she didn’t love the storyline either, even though audiences did.

Davis then shared more about a specific episode from season two, “Four Women and a Funeral.” In the episode, Charlotte meets a man named Ned at a cemetery and later sleeps with him, only to learn he lied about grieving his wife. Ned was played by actor Kurt Deutsch, and Davis was careful to clarify that her discomfort wasn’t about him personally.

“It wasn’t Kurt,” she explained. “I just didn’t love that sex scene.” Part of the issue, she said, was timing. She was called in late at night — around 11 p.m. — to film the scene after thinking she had the day off.

Davis described how schedules on a big TV production could change at the last minute. Scenes were often moved around to accommodate other actors’ work hours, which sometimes meant someone else had to come in late to film a single scene. While that made logistical sense, it didn’t always make things easier for the actor showing up tired to shoot an intimate moment.

Despite those challenges, Davis said she always showed up when needed. “They own you,” she said, adding that being a team player was essential. The success of the show depended on everyone doing their part, even when it was uncomfortable.

Of course, Charlotte’s story eventually took a happier turn. After several failed relationships, she found lasting love with her divorce lawyer, Harry Goldenblatt, played by Evan Handler — a relationship that became one of the most beloved arcs of the series.

Looking back, Davis’s reflections offer fans a reminder that even glamorous TV moments can come with very human, behind-the-scenes struggles.
