Guthrie did not appear on camera during the broadcast, but colleagues revealed she stopped by to thank the production team and hosts for their support during what has become one of the most difficult periods of her life.
Her visit comes as the search continues for her missing mother, 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, who authorities say was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona, on February 1.
A Quiet Return to Familiar Ground
Guthrie’s co-hosts shared details of her visit during the 10 a.m. hour of Today.
According to them, the veteran journalist made a point of greeting and embracing staff members throughout the studio.
“She hugged every single person in this room,” said co-host Jenna Bush Hager.
The network later confirmed in a statement that Guthrie simply wanted to personally thank colleagues who have supported her family during the crisis.
NBC emphasized that although she plans to return to her role, Guthrie remains focused primarily on helping find her mother.
“While she plans to return to the show on air, she remains focused right now supporting her family and working to help bring Nancy home,” the network said.
Hager added that Guthrie is determined to come back when she feels able.
“She said that she has the intention to return to the show — even though it feels like the hardest thing to do, it’s also her home and where she feels so loved.”
Life Away From the Anchor Desk
Guthrie has spent most of the past five weeks in Arizona with her siblings, Annie and Camron, coordinating search efforts and working with investigators.
The family has taken an unusually active role in the investigation, offering a reward of more than $1.2 million for information that could lead to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery.
During this time, Guthrie also withdrew from her planned coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, choosing instead to remain with her family during the search.
Familiar Faces Fill the Today Chair
While Guthrie has been away, Today has relied on a rotation of well-known NBC personalities to keep the morning broadcast running smoothly.
The most notable temporary return has been that of former co-anchor Hoda Kotb, who retired from the program in January 2025.
Kotb came back in an interim role to help stabilize the show during the crisis.
She has been co-anchoring the 7–9 a.m. block alongside Craig Melvin, who became Guthrie’s permanent partner following Kotb’s retirement.
Other NBC anchors have stepped in as needed, including Sheinelle Jones, who has frequently filled the seat when Kotb is unavailable.
Meanwhile, sports broadcaster Mary Carillo replaced Guthrie in NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony after the anchor stepped away from the assignment.
NBC executives have stressed that Guthrie’s position remains secure and that Kotb’s return is strictly temporary.
Investigation Enters Critical Phase
The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie remains under active investigation by local authorities and the FBI.
Officials say a masked man armed with a weapon was captured on doorbell surveillance footage outside Nancy’s home on the night she vanished.
Investigators recently examined a potential forensic lead after a black glove was discovered about two miles from the property.
DNA from the glove matched a local restaurant worker, but authorities quickly ruled him out as a suspect. The glove was likely unrelated to the crime.
Despite that dead end, law enforcement believes progress is being made.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators are “definitely closer” to identifying suspects, citing a growing pool of evidence and intelligence.
Authorities are currently analyzing footage from neighborhood Ring cameras. One nearby camera captured 12 vehicles passing through the area during the suspected abduction window between 1:47 a.m. and 2:15 a.m.
FBI analysts reviewing the doorbell video also believe the suspect may have been communicating through a walkie-talkie-style device, suggesting the possibility of an accomplice.
Expanding the Search
Search operations have spread beyond the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson as investigators follow leads across Arizona.
The FBI recently moved its command center to Phoenix to better coordinate digital evidence and statewide tips.
Despite extensive investigative work, officials say no arrests have been made, and there has been no confirmed proof of life or communication from whoever took Nancy Guthrie.
A Family’s Ongoing Appeal
Over the weekend, Savannah Guthrie and family members visited a memorial set up near Nancy’s property, leaving yellow flowers and thanking members of the community who have supported the search.
The family has repeatedly urged anyone with information — no matter how small — to come forward.
For now, Guthrie’s brief visit to the Today studio signals that she hopes to return someday soon.
But until her mother is found, those close to her say her focus remains entirely on bringing Nancy Guthrie home.
