The video, currently exclusive to Apple Music and Spotify, opens like a cheesy 1990s commercial for a cleaning spray called Opalite. The product promises to magically fix everything in your life — friendships, relationships, pets, and even co-workers.
Once the song kicks in, Swift unboxes her new “best friend,” a pet rock. The two do everything together: make friendship bracelets, sing karaoke, and hit the bars. Things get even more fun when familiar faces begin popping up throughout the video.
All the celebrity cameos share a connection — they were guests alongside Swift on The Graham Norton Show back in October. Greta Lee appears as a singer-songwriter on MTV, Jodie Turner-Smith hosts a fitness show, and Domhnall Gleeson plays a man stuck in an unhealthy relationship with his pet cactus.
Fed up, Gleeson orders Opalite and sprays the cactus — which suddenly causes Swift to magically appear in his house. The two spark a romance, complete with awkward mall photo shoots shot by Lewis Capaldi. Graham Norton also joins in, playing an Opalite salesman, while Cillian Murphy appears in an in-universe Opalite advertisement.
The video wraps up with Swift and Gleeson performing at a dance competition in matching mint-green and orange tracksuits, followed by a meta ending showing the cast back together on The Graham Norton Show.
On X, Swift explained how the idea came together. She said she felt “ridiculously lucky” to be paired with such a talented group on the show. During the interview, Gleeson joked about wanting to be in one of her music videos — and Swift immediately ran with the idea.
“A week later, he received an email with a script I’d written,” she shared, adding that she loved the idea of turning the whole thing into a group project inspired by their talk-show appearance. Everyone agreed to “time travel back to the ’90s” for the video.
Swift teased the video’s release with a countdown on her website, revealing it would premiere at 8 a.m. ET on Friday. The video will remain exclusive to Apple Music and Spotify until Feb. 8, when it officially lands on YouTube.
“Opalite” has already been a strong performer, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and most recently sitting at No. 10 in its 17th week. Swift has shared that the song is her fiancé Travis Kelce’s favorite track on the album. She’s also explained that the word “opalite” inspired her — a manmade version of an opal — as a metaphor for happiness being something people can create for themselves.
The Life of a Showgirl was released in October and made history, selling 2.7 million copies on its first day and becoming the most-consumed album ever on the Billboard 200, surpassing Adele’s 25. Its lead single, “The Fate of Ophelia,” went on to become Swift’s 13th No. 1 hit.
With “Opalite,” Swift once again proves that even a pet rock can shine — if you add the right amount of imagination. 💎🎶
