Urgent Search Underway for Savannah Guthrie’s Missing Mother in Arizona

Authorities in Arizona are asking for the public’s help to find Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, who has been missing since Saturday night.

According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Nancy was last seen around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, at her home near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue in Tucson. Family members reported her missing around noon the next day.

Sheriff Chris Nanos said the case quickly raised concerns after deputies arrived at the home.

“We get these calls quite often,” Nanos said during a Sunday press conference. “But this one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we found.”

Nancy Guthrie is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall, about 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. Authorities do not know what she was wearing when she disappeared.

While Nancy has no cognitive issues, the sheriff said she is not in good physical health and has mobility limitations. Investigators are especially worried because she may have been outside overnight in cold temperatures.

“She has no cognitive issues at all,” Nanos explained. “Just some physical ailments that limit her ability to move around.”

A large search-and-rescue effort is now underway. Crews are using helicopters, airplanes, drones, and K-9 teams, including search dogs loaned from Border Patrol. Homicide detectives are also involved, though officials stressed that no conclusions have been reached and no body has been found.

“I hope we find her safe and sound,” Nanos said. “But we can’t ignore what’s in front of us.”

A spokesperson for the Today show confirmed the situation in a statement, saying the family is working closely with law enforcement and is grateful for the public’s support.

Nancy Guthrie last appeared on Today in November 2025 during a visit to Savannah’s hometown. Savannah has previously spoken warmly about her mother on the show, including during a 2023 segment about life lessons from moms. She has not yet commented publicly on her mother’s disappearance.

For now, authorities say every tip matters as the search continues.
