According to a source, Johnny Depp quietly opened the doors of one of his Los Angeles homes to the late “Grey’s Anatomy” star after Dane was diagnosed with ALS.
The insider says Depp offered Dane a “pay-what-you-can” arrangement, allowing him to stay in one of the actor’s properties above the Sunset Strip with little to no financial pressure.
“Eric had one less thing to worry about,” the source shared. “Johnny told him to pay whatever he could — or couldn’t — for rent.”
A Quiet Act of Kindness
Johnny Depp and Eric Dane reportedly met years ago through mutual friends and stayed in touch. When Dane’s health began to decline, Depp wanted to help ease the burden.
Dane publicly revealed in April 2025 that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive nervous system disease that causes loss of muscle control. By June, he had lost the use of his right arm.
In an emotional interview on Good Morning America, he admitted the reality was “sobering,” explaining that his right side had completely stopped functioning and he feared losing mobility in his left hand next.
Despite his worsening condition, Dane dedicated himself to ALS advocacy, joining the board of Target ALS and working to raise awareness about the disease.
His Final Days
Dane passed away Thursday at age 53 following what his family called a “courageous battle with ALS.”
In a statement, they said he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones, including his devoted wife and daughters, Billie and Georgia.
“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research,” the family said. “He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.”
ALS — also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease — is a progressive, degenerative condition that eventually leads to death. The disease has also affected figures such as baseball legend Lou Gehrig and physicist Stephen Hawking.
Helping Others, Too
Dane wasn’t the only friend Depp has reportedly tried to help.
Sources say Depp extended a similar flexible rent offer to actor Mickey Rourke after he was evicted from his home in January over nearly $60,000 in overdue rent. Rourke, who starred alongside Depp in Once Upon a Time in Mexico, has not accepted the offer.
Those close to the situation say Depp — who owns multiple properties in the Los Angeles area — has quietly stepped in to support friends during difficult times.
For Dane, that generosity meant one less stress during an unimaginably difficult chapter — and a reminder that even in Hollywood, acts of kindness can happen far from the spotlight.
