The Oscar-winning actress took the stage during the opening ceremony to deliver a message of peace inspired by Nelson Mandela, the late leader and activist from her home country of South Africa. Speaking to a packed stadium and millions watching around the world, Theron reminded audiences that the Olympic Games stand for far more than medals.
“Peace is not just the absence of conflict,” Theron said, quoting Mandela. “Peace is the creation of an environment where all can flourish, regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, class, caste, or any other social markers of difference.”
Dressed in a floor-length black gown, the Mad Max: Fury Road star told the crowd that Mandela’s words feel especially meaningful today. Addressing athletes and spectators from every corner of the globe, she expressed hope that the Games would help bring people together during a time of global division.
“Let these Games be more than just sport,” Theron said. “Let them be a reminder of our common humanity, our respect for one another, and a resounding call for peace everywhere.”
Beyond her acting career, Theron is also a messenger of peace for the United Nations, where her work focuses on preventing HIV and ending violence against women. Her appearance at the Olympics reflected both her global advocacy and her personal connection to the host city.
According to the official Olympics website, Theron lived in Milan for a year when she was 17 while working as a model, before moving to the United States with her mother. That move soon led to a successful film career, with roles in movies such as The Devil’s Advocate, Mighty Joe Young, The Cider House Rules, and The Italian Job, which was filmed in Italy.
With Theron’s message setting the tone, the 2026 Winter Olympics began not only as a celebration of athletic excellence, but also as a reminder of shared values — unity, respect, and the hope for a more peaceful world.
