Sky to Bring The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Back as New TV Series

Sky has officially commissioned a new television adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the globally bestselling novel by Stieg Larsson. The project will be an eight-episode Sky Original series that reimagines the iconic story for a modern audience.

The series will be written and executive produced by Steve Lightfoot (Spider-Noir, Hannibal) and Angela LaManna (The Haunting of Bly Manor). Production is being handled by Left Bank Pictures, with Andy Harries, Charlotte Moore, and John Phillips serving as executive producers. They are joined by Sam Hoyle for Sky, along with Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin.

Filming is scheduled to begin this spring in Lithuania. Once completed, the series will stream on Sky across the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Sony Pictures Television will manage international distribution, with U.S. pre-sales already underway.

A Classic Mystery, Updated for Today

The story follows disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist and brilliant hacker Lisbeth Salander as they investigate the decades-old disappearance of a young woman from a powerful family. According to Sky’s official description, the new series will bring the narrative “into the present,” while staying true to the investigative core and characters that define Larsson’s work, with themes designed to resonate strongly with today’s world.

A TV adaptation of the novel had previously been explored at Amazon, but that version never progressed beyond development.

The Legacy of the Millennium Series

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first book in Larsson’s Millennium series. Larsson completed three novels before his death in 2004: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest. The series was later continued by David Lagercrantz and, more recently, Karin Smirnoff. Altogether, the books have sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.

The franchise has already seen major screen success. The original Swedish film trilogy starred Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist, while a 2011 American adaptation featured Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. A later film, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, was released in 2018.

With this new Sky series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is set to enter a new chapter—one that aims to honor its dark, gripping roots while speaking directly to the present day.
