Sam Raimi Says His Spider-Man Era Is Over for Good

Sam Raimi, who directed Sony’s original Spider-Man film trilogy from 2002 to 2007, says his version of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson will not return to the big screen.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Raimi explained that his take on Spider-Man, played by Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, has “gone elsewhere,” and he does not expect to revisit those characters.

Raimi said Spider-Man is a character created by Stan Lee with the help of many Marvel writers and artists over decades. He described his role as briefly carrying the torch for the character before passing it on to new filmmakers.

After completing three Spider-Man films, Raimi said it was time for others to continue the story. He noted that today’s audiences are deeply invested in the newer version of Spider-Man, led by Tom Holland.

“It wouldn’t be right for me to go back and try to resurrect my version of this story,” Raimi said, adding that a new generation of fans is enjoying the current era.

Raimi’s first Spider-Man was released in 2002, followed by Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3. In 2012, director Marc Webb rebooted the franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield, followed by a sequel in 2014.

Marvel Studios brought Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016 with Captain America: Civil War. Holland later starred in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The latest Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has recently finished production and is set to release on July 31. The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and features returning stars Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, along with new cast members including Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo, Tramell Tillman, and Michael Mando.
