The series comes from writer, showrunner, and executive producer Ronald D. Moore, best known for Outlander and For All Mankind. God of War centers on the powerful yet haunted warrior Kratos and his young son Atreus as they journey to fulfill the final wish of Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye: spreading her ashes from the highest peak. Along the way, father and son confront gods, monsters, and their own emotional scars, forging a deeply personal bond.
Kratos, the central figure of the long-running franchise, is Spartan by birth and a god by destiny. Raised in a brutal warrior culture, he once pledged himself to Ares, a decision that cost him his soul. Across more than a decade and 10 hugely successful games, Kratos became one of gaming’s most iconic characters—known for his unmatched combat ability, quiet intensity, and tragic past.
The live-action adaptation will closely follow the narrative arc of the franchise’s two most recent games, which introduced a new chapter in Kratos’ life: fatherhood. His relationship with his ten-year-old son Atreus reshaped the series, shifting it from pure vengeance to a story about grief, responsibility, and redemption. This evolving father-son dynamic is expected to be the emotional core of the Prime Video show.
Hurst’s casting marks a notable return to the God of War universe. He previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök, a performance that earned him a BAFTA nomination. Stepping into the role of Kratos now brings his connection to the franchise full circle.
The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Co-executive producers include Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis. Frederick E.O. Toye, known for Shōgun and The Boys, will direct the first two episodes.
Hurst is widely recognized for his role as Opie Winston on FX’s Sons of Anarchy. He recently reunited with creator Kurt Sutter for Netflix’s The Abandons, where he starred as Miles Alderton. His extensive television résumé also includes The Walking Dead, SWAT, The Mysterious Benedict Society, Bosch, and Bates Motel. Up next, he will appear in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey, set to premiere on July 17.
With a proven fan-favorite actor stepping into one of gaming’s most legendary roles, Prime Video’s God of War series is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched video game adaptations yet.
