The actress, best known for playing the lovable teen witch on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, recently looked back on a photo taken at the 1999 New York premiere of Drive Me Crazy. In the picture, Hart stands beside pop superstar Britney Spears, who is smiling brightly. Hart, however, looks tense — and now fans know why.
“This was one of the worst days of my life at the time,” Hart said, explaining that her eyes looked red because she had been crying.
The romantic comedy Drive Me Crazy, which starred Hart and Adrian Grenier, was named after Spears’ hit song released earlier that year. The premiere should have been a career high point, but behind the scenes, everything was falling apart.
Hart revealed that she had been rushing from press duties because she was scheduled to fly to Vancouver to film a small but memorable opening role in Scary Movie. The role was a parody of Drew Barrymore’s famous opening scene in Scream.
However, during a costume fitting, Hart was suddenly dropped from the project. “They decided I didn’t have big enough boobs,” she said bluntly. While heading to the airport, she received a call telling her she was fired and should return to the premiere instead.
Things got even worse when she arrived.
Hart said her lawyer met her and delivered another shock: because of her Maxim magazine cover, she was allegedly being fired from her hit TV show Sabrina the Teenage Witch. At the time, Hart believed her entire career was collapsing in one night.
Overwhelmed, she broke down in tears. The moment became even more emotional when her father hugged her — something she said rarely happened. “It was just a dramatic night,” she recalled.
In the end, the fear turned out to be temporary. Hart was not fired from Sabrina, which continued for four more years. Drive Me Crazy also performed well at the box office, earning nearly three times its budget.
Still, Hart never became part of the Scary Movie franchise. The role went to Carmen Electra, and the series later helped launch stars like Anna Faris and Regina Hall.
Now, the franchise is gearing up for a comeback. Faris and Hall have confirmed they will return, and original co-writer and star Marlon Wayans has teased that Scary Movie 6 will be bold, outrageous, and focused on making everyone laugh.
