On Monday’s episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, Kelly criticized Amy Poehler for winning the inaugural podcast honor for Good Hang, suggesting the award was predictable and undeserved.
“Amy Poehler won. That’s no shock, they gave it to one of their own,” Kelly said, adding sarcastically that Poehler’s podcast must be “really, really insightful,” despite admitting she has never watched a full episode.
Kelly went on to mock a recent Good Hang episode featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, dismissing the conversation as unrelatable and shallow. She also accused Poehler of being unprepared, claiming the comedian mistakenly thought Paltrow appeared in Cold Mountain — a film Paltrow was not part of.
“That’s embarrassing and disrespectful,” Kelly said, arguing that Poehler failed to properly research her guest’s work. “And that’s what wins you the award for best podcast.”
Good Hang beat out several high-profile nominees, including Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard, Call Her Daddy hosted by Alex Cooper, The Mel Robbins Podcast, SmartLess — hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes — as well as NPR’s Up First.
During her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, Poehler struck a joking tone, thanking her fellow nominees while poking fun at NPR. “I’m big fans of all of you, except for NPR, just a bunch of celebs phoning it in. Try harder,” she said, drawing laughs from the audience.
Kelly, who previously worked as a host at Fox News, has already distanced herself from the new podcast category. She previously revealed that she withdrew her own show from consideration, saying she disliked the “choose me” nature of awards campaigns and had “zero interest in their stupid awards.”
While the Golden Globes appear eager to embrace podcasts as a major media force, Kelly’s sharp reaction shows that the debate over what defines award-worthy podcasting is far from settled.
