In a new cover story with Men’s Health, the Grammy-nominated artist said his obesity caused major medical problems, including very low testosterone levels. At one point, his testosterone measured just 57 ng/dL — far below what is considered normal for a man in his early 40s.
“You can’t get it up without testosterone,” Jelly Roll said candidly. Even though he was married to his wife, Bunnie Xo, he struggled with arousal and intimacy.
Doctors typically consider normal testosterone levels for men his age to start around 300 ng/dL and go up to 1,000. Obesity is known to significantly lower testosterone, along with increasing insulin and cholesterol levels.
Seeing his test results on paper was a turning point. Jelly Roll said it helped push him to start his weight-loss journey and begin testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). He now expects to remain on TRT long-term.
The changes, he said, have been dramatic. He joked that his sex life has been completely transformed and compared his renewed energy to that of a teenager.
Earlier this month, Jelly Roll also spoke about the issue on The Joe Rogan Experience, making it clear that his wife was never the problem. He said his size left him unable to get aroused and even joked about having to contort his body just to attempt intimacy.
Born Jason Bradley Deford, Jelly Roll once weighed about 550 pounds. Since starting his weight-loss journey in 2022, he has lost more than 200 pounds.
In September, he celebrated the milestone by buying a new designer wardrobe, joking on social media that fitting into luxury brands was now a reality — and a threat to his bank account.
Today, Jelly Roll says the combination of weight loss and hormone treatment has not only improved his health, but also restored his confidence and quality of life.
