The Oscar-winning actress joined the hit musical TV series in season 2 as substitute teacher Holly Holliday, appearing in three episodes. Her role was a success, earning her the 2011 Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, but filming was not always smooth.
Paltrow recently shared that the most stressful moment came during the big musical finale of her first episode, “The Substitute.” The number combined “Singing in the Rain” with Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and featured heavy water effects.
She explained that something went wrong with the water used during filming. There were bubbles in it, and the crew struggled to fix the issue while cameras were rolling. The situation made the set feel tense at the time.
Despite the problems, Paltrow says she loved performing the number. She focused on learning the choreography and enjoyed how fast-paced television production was. Unlike a movie, where one scene might take days, the show filmed the entire musical sequence and then quickly moved on.
During her run on the series, Paltrow performed several well-known songs, including “Forget You,” “Kiss,” “Landslide,” and “Turning Tables.” She later returned again in 2014 for the show’s 100th episode.
Looking back, Paltrow says her early days on Glee remain some of her favorite work. She praised the show’s creativity and innovation, calling the experience one of the best projects she has ever been part of.
