Sydney Sweeney Opens Up on ‘Female Rage,’ Housemaid Sequel Hopes, and Clearing Up Rumors

Sydney Sweeney has had a turbulent few weeks, and now the actress is finally speaking about what she’s been feeling — and what she hopes comes next.

The 28-year-old star says she would “love” to return for a sequel to The Housemaid, following the release of the film based on the 2022 novel by Freida McFadden. Sweeney plays Millie, a live-in housemaid trying to rebuild her life from scratch, and it’s a character she feels deeply connected to.

Speaking to People, Sweeney made it clear that Millie is someone she wants to explore again. “She’s spicy. She is a fighter. She knows what she believes in and she stands up for it,” she said. “I love characters like that. I love seeing movies that have just fully embraced female rage.”

Sweeney added that her love for the story began long before the cameras started rolling. She said she was a huge fan of the books and would be just as excited as audiences to see more Housemaid stories come to life and to dive deeper into Millie’s journey.

Her comments come during a difficult period in her career. In mid-2024, Sweeney found herself at the center of controversy after photos from her mother’s birthday party surfaced online, showing guests wearing MAGA hats. The images led to accusations that she supported Donald Trump, something Sweeney denied. She later asked people to stop making assumptions about her political views.

The backlash didn’t stop there. Soon after, her American Eagle “great jeans” ad campaign drew criticism, with some commentators claiming the wordplay around “genes” echoed eugenics-related language. Reports that Sweeney was registered as a Republican voter also fueled online debate. Even Trump himself weighed in publicly, while Sweeney largely chose to stay quiet amid the noise.

As if that wasn’t enough, the actress also recently addressed another long-running rumor — whether her breasts are real.

Sweeney appeared on Vanity Fair’s lie detector test alongside her The Housemaid co-star Amanda Seyfried. During the test, Seyfried didn’t shy away from asking the question many people have whispered online.

“I just have to ask, are your boobs real?” Seyfried said.

Sweeney laughed it off and confidently answered yes. When asked if she had ever had any work done, she shook her head and said, “No, I’ve never gotten any work done anywhere.” The polygraph examiner confirmed her answers were truthful, prompting Seyfried to joke, “Can I touch them?”

Between career controversies, political speculation, and deeply personal rumors, Sweeney has had plenty to deal with. Still, her focus appears to be on the work — strong characters, bold stories, and roles that let women be angry, complicated, and unapologetically themselves.
