James Ransone, ‘The Wire’ Actor Known for Playing Ziggy Sobotka, Dies at 46

Actor James Ransone, best known for his standout role on The Wire, has died at the age of 46.

The Los Angeles Medical Examiner confirmed that Ransone died by suicide on Friday. Authorities say officers responded to a call at a residence, completed a death investigation report, and found no signs of foul play.

Ransone began his acting career in the early 2000s with small roles on television, appearing in shows like Ed and Third Watch. His breakout came with The Wire, where he played Ziggy Sobotka during the show’s second season. As a troubled dock worker pulled into crime, Ransone delivered a raw and memorable performance that earned widespread praise from critics and fans alike. Many viewers continue to cite Ziggy as one of the series’ most complex and unforgettable characters.

Beyond The Wire, Ransone built a steady career across television and film. His credits included appearances on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Hawaii Five-0, and Burn Notice. On the big screen, he appeared in films such as Tangerine, It: Chapter Two, and The Black Phone. He also returned for The Black Phone 2, which was released earlier this year.

Ransone was known for bringing intensity and vulnerability to his roles, often portraying characters on the margins. His work left a lasting impression on audiences and helped shape some of the most emotionally charged moments in modern television and film.
