Alec Baldwin Says ‘Rust’ Tragedy Left Lasting Trauma and Took a Heavy Toll

More than four years after the fatal on-set shooting during the filming of Rust, Alec Baldwin says the experience continues to weigh heavily on his life, health and career.

Speaking on the Dec. 19 episode of the Dopey podcast, the 67-year-old actor described the incident as something that “broke every nerve” in his body — emotionally, spiritually and financially. Baldwin said the stress and fallout following the tragedy have had a profound effect on his well-being.

“If I told you what my health conditions have been since October 21 of 2021,” Baldwin said, referring to the day of the accident, “it’s taken 10 years off of my life.”

The tragedy occurred when cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, was fatally shot after a prop gun Baldwin was holding discharged on set. Baldwin later faced involuntary manslaughter charges twice before the case was dismissed with prejudice in July 2024.

The aftermath, Baldwin said, left him physically and mentally drained. At one point, he recalled needing daily naps for an entire year and feeling so overwhelmed that he “couldn’t even move.”

Earlier this year, Baldwin opened up further about the long legal and emotional journey on The Baldwins, the TLC reality show he shares with his wife, Hilaria Baldwin. During a February episode, he described the situation as “surreal” and admitted that seeing the pain his wife endured was sometimes harder than dealing with his own.

“I always feel more in pain about you than me,” Baldwin told Hilaria. “I think to myself, ‘Well, I’m going to try my best to get through it.’ And I think what it’s done to you and how much it’s hurt you.”

Hilaria acknowledged the toll the situation took on her husband, but Baldwin made it clear that family has been his anchor. He shares seven children with Hilaria, as well as daughter Ireland, 30, with ex-wife Kim Basinger.

“From the bottom of my soul,” Baldwin said, “I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have you or these kids.”

While the legal case may be over, Baldwin’s comments show that the emotional impact of the Rust tragedy is far from behind him — and that recovery, for him, remains an ongoing process.
