Timothée Chalamet Faces Backlash Over Opera and Ballet Comments Days Before Oscars

Just days before the 98th Academy Awards, actor Timothée Chalamet is facing criticism after comments he made about opera and ballet sparked backlash across the arts community.

Chalamet, who is widely considered a top contender for Best Actor at the upcoming Oscars on March 15, 2026, made the remarks during a late-February interview with Matthew McConaughey hosted by Variety and CNN. The conversation focused on the importance of preserving the movie theater experience.

While discussing cinema’s future, Chalamet compared film with traditional live performing arts in a way that many viewers interpreted as dismissive.

“I don't want to be working in ballet or opera or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive,’ even though it’s like, no one cares about this anymore.”

He quickly added that he meant “all respect to the ballet and opera people out there,” and joked that he had “just lost 14 cents in viewership.” However, once the clip resurfaced and spread widely online in early March, it triggered immediate criticism.

Arts Organizations Respond With Criticism — and Humor

Several performing arts organizations responded to the controversy, some sharply criticizing the actor while others used humor to highlight their work.

The Seattle Opera turned Chalamet’s “14 cents” remark into a marketing opportunity. The company offered a 14% discount on tickets to its production of Carmen using the promotional code “TIMOTHEE.”

Other opera companies followed suit. The Pittsburgh Opera launched its own ticket promotion jokingly labeled the “Timmi discount.”

Meanwhile, performers and public figures defended the art forms. On the daytime talk show The View, host Whoopi Goldberg and co-host Sunny Hostin criticized the remarks, with Hostin describing them as “vapid and shallow.”

Singer Doja Cat also weighed in on TikTok, explaining the centuries-long history of opera and ballet and emphasizing the discipline required to perform them.

Professional artists joined the response as well. Megan Fairchild, a principal dancer with New York City Ballet, and conductor Alondra de la Parra both posted viral social media messages defending the cultural importance and physical demands of their fields.

Timing Raises Questions Ahead of the Oscars

The controversy comes at a critical moment for Chalamet’s awards campaign.

He is nominated for Best Actor at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards for his performance as table-tennis prodigy Marty Mauser in the film Marty Supreme. The actor also received a nomination as a producer for Best Picture, making him the youngest person ever to be nominated for both acting and producing in the same year.

Earlier in the awards season, Chalamet appeared to be the clear frontrunner after winning both the Golden Globe Awards and the Critics Choice Awards.

However, momentum has recently shifted toward Michael B. Jordan, whose performance in Sinners won the top acting honor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Although official Oscar voting closed before the backlash gained traction online, industry observers say the controversy could still affect the public narrative surrounding the race.

A Pattern of Past Controversies

While Chalamet has long maintained a “golden boy” reputation in Hollywood, his career has experienced several moments of public criticism.

The Woody Allen Film Debate

One of his earliest controversies came in 2018 after he worked with director Woody Allen on the film A Rainy Day in New York. Renewed attention to allegations against Allen during the #MeToo movement prompted criticism of the project.

Chalamet responded by donating his entire salary from the film to Time’s Up, RAINN, and the LGBT Center of New York. The move, however, drew mixed reactions. Some critics said he should not have taken the role in the first place, while others argued the donation appeared strategic.

The issue resurfaced again in early 2026 when leaked emails reportedly suggested that publicists and agents encouraged the donation to protect his awards campaign at the time.

Casting and Film-Related Backlash

Chalamet also faced skepticism when he was cast as Willy Wonka in the 2023 film Wonka. Some audiences were initially resistant to another reboot of the classic character associated with Gene Wilder.

The film later earned strong reviews, but debate continued around the production’s decision to use CGI to shrink actors playing the Oompa Loompas instead of casting performers with dwarfism.

More recently, trailers for the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown drew online mockery for Chalamet’s portrayal of the singer’s distinctive voice.

Personal Life and Public Image

Chalamet’s relationship with reality-TV star and entrepreneur Kylie Jenner also sparked discussion among fans. Some longtime followers felt the relationship clashed with his carefully cultivated “indie film” image.

A viral moment at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards — where the couple appeared to whisper during the ceremony — fueled tabloid speculation involving Selena Gomez, which Chalamet later dismissed as baseless.

Old Comments Add Fuel to Current Debate

The latest controversy intensified when fans uncovered a 2019 appearance by Chalamet on The Graham Norton Show where he made similar comments, describing ballet and opera as “outdated” and “dying” art forms.

Critics say the resurfaced clip suggests his recent remarks reflect a long-held view rather than a poorly phrased moment.

The discovery has also raised eyebrows because members of Chalamet’s own family, including his mother and sister, have backgrounds in dance.

Oscar Night Approaches

Despite the backlash, Chalamet’s performance in Marty Supreme remains one of the most acclaimed of the year.

At age 30, he has already become the youngest male actor since Marlon Brando to receive three Best Actor nominations. His dual nominations for acting and producing also place him in rare territory among Hollywood’s leading performers.

With Oscar voting already completed, the final outcome will be revealed when the 98th Academy Awards ceremony takes place Sunday night.

For now, the awards race between Chalamet and Michael B. Jordan remains one of the most closely watched contests of the season—now with an unexpected controversy adding to the drama.
