According to court records, Stevenson, 77, was indicted on Monday in Wilmington, Delaware. The charge stems from an incident at the couple’s home late on the night of December 28.
Local police say they responded to a report of a domestic dispute at the house around 11:15 p.m. When officers arrived, they found Linda Stevenson, 64, unresponsive in the living room. Police attempted to give her medical aid, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause and manner of Linda Stevenson’s death have not yet been released. However, dispatch audio from the night of the incident mentions cardiac arrest. Authorities say William Stevenson was the person who called 911 and that he cooperated with police at the time.
Following the indictment, William Stevenson was arrested on Monday. He is currently being held in jail on a $500,000 bond.
Jill Biden married William Stevenson in February 1970, when she was a student at the University of Delaware and he was 23 years old. The couple separated in 1974 and went through a contentious divorce. A few years later, in June 1977, Jill married Joe Biden, who was then serving as a U.S. senator from Delaware.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not shared additional details about what led to the charge.
