Timothée Chalamet Says He Was Threatened by an Extra While Filming Marty Supreme

Timothée Chalamet has revealed a tense behind-the-scenes moment from the set of Josh Safdie’s upcoming film Marty Supreme, sharing that a background actor unexpectedly threatened him during a scene.

Speaking during a recent Q&A with Robert Downey Jr. at New York’s DGA Theater, Chalamet described the incident while discussing his experience working with non-professional actors in the film’s motel sequence. According to Chalamet, the scene required him to provoke one of the background performers to generate genuine anger on camera.

“There are a lot of non-actors in that scene, which I usually find really thrilling to work with,” Chalamet said, as quoted by People. “But sometimes it would take multiple takes to really get something out of them. I was getting right in the guy’s face, really trying to make him angry.”

At first, Chalamet believed his efforts weren’t working. But after another take, the situation took a sudden turn.

“The guy said, ‘I was just in jail for 30 years. You really don’t want to mess with me. You don’t want to see me angry,’” Chalamet recalled, laughing nervously. He added that he immediately turned to director Josh Safdie and said, “Who do you have me acting opposite, man?”

Marty Supreme stars Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a driven underdog pursuing his dream of becoming a table-tennis champion. The film is a fictionalized take on the life of Marty Reisman, a legendary figure who won five world championship medals in the sport.

The role has already earned Chalamet major awards recognition. He is considered an Oscar frontrunner and has picked up honors from the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Golden Globe Awards, along with a nomination from the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

During his Golden Globes acceptance speech, Chalamet reflected on perseverance and gratitude. “My dad instilled in me a spirit of gratitude growing up,” he said. “‘Always be grateful for what you have.’ I’ve walked away from ceremonies empty-handed before, grateful just to be there. But I’d be lying if I said those moments didn’t make this one even sweeter.”

With Marty Supreme generating strong buzz and memorable stories from its production, Chalamet’s performance appears poised to be one of the defining roles of his career.
