Palmer will play Phoebe, also known as Sif, the wife of Thor and the Norse goddess of family. Amazon declined to comment on the casting.
The series is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios and has already received a two-season order. Pre-production is currently underway in Vancouver, with casting now in progress.
The show comes from writer, showrunner, and executive producer Ronald D. Moore, best known for Outlander and For All Mankind. The story follows Kratos and his 10-year-old son, Atreus, as they journey to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Along the way, Kratos struggles to teach his son how to be a god, while Atreus tries to show his father how to be more human.
Kratos, the central figure of the franchise, is Spartan by birth and a god by nature. After making a tragic deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, he loses his soul in exchange for victory in battle. Across more than 10 games, Kratos has battled mortals, monsters, and gods, becoming one of the most recognizable characters in video game history.
God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Executive producers include Moore, Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers. Frederick E.O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes.
Palmer is best known for starring as Diana Bishop in A Discovery of Witches, based on Deborah Harkness’ “All Souls Trilogy.” Her recent television work includes The Family Next Door and AMC+’s The Last Anniversary. Her film credits include Warm Bodies, The Fall Guy, Berlin Syndrome, Hacksaw Ridge, and Point Break.
With Palmer and Hurst now on board, Prime Video’s God of War series continues to take shape as one of the most closely watched video game adaptations in development.
