In a recent appearance on The Julia Cunningham Show podcast, the Game of Thrones alum spoke cautiously about the project, declining to share details about sets or filming status. “I don’t know,” Turner said when asked whether cameras have started rolling, before shifting focus to the show’s extreme secrecy.
According to Turner, the security around the series surpasses even what she experienced on Game of Thrones. Accessing scripts requires multiple log-ins and facial recognition technology. “It’s intense,” she said, joking that “it’s like raiding a tomb just getting to the scripts.”
The new live-action series is being developed for Amazon and is led creatively by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Turner stars as Lara Croft alongside Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs. Weaver plays a newly created character, Evelyn Wallis, described as a mysterious figure eager to exploit Lara’s skills.
Turner said she is thrilled to take on the role of Croft, a character she views as a powerful female icon. She noted that playing Lara across multiple episodes is especially exciting, as television allows characters to grow over time. Turner also shared her enthusiasm for collaborating with Waller-Bridge, saying the two are in constant contact as they shape this new version of the franchise.
Amazon recently unveiled a first look at Turner as Lara Croft, revealing a design inspired by the character’s original 1990s video game appearance. The look marks a clear nod to longtime fans and differs from previous live-action adaptations.
The role of Lara Croft has previously been portrayed on screen by Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s films and by Alicia Vikander in the 2018 reboot. Turner now becomes the latest actress to step into the boots of one of gaming’s most recognizable characters.
With its heightened secrecy, classic-inspired design, and high-profile creative team, Amazon’s Tomb Raider series is shaping up to be one of the streamer’s most closely guarded—and anticipated—projects.
