The Abandons Fell Quickly After a Strong Start
The Western drama The Abandons debuted on December 4 and drew 19.8 million views in its first 28 days. Starring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, the show initially found traction, spending two weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 for English-language series. It ranked No. 4 during both weeks, pulling in 7.4 million and 7.6 million views.
After that early momentum, viewership dropped sharply. The series fell out of the Top 10 and added only 4.8 million more views over the next 17 days. The big-budget production also faced challenges behind the scenes, including the departure of creator Kurt Sutter before production wrapped. The show also received mixed reviews, which may have contributed to its short lifespan.
Set in Washington Territory in 1854, The Abandons followed two rival families led by powerful matriarchs played by Headey and Anderson. While the series is ending, Headey will remain at Netflix as the lead of an upcoming four-part detective series from Charlie Brooker.
The Vince Staples Show Never Broke Through
Season 2 of The Vince Staples Show, co-created by and starring Vince Staples, performed even more modestly. Released on November 6, the second season logged just 1.7 million views, ranking No. 1,446 in Netflix’s second-half 2025 report.
By comparison, Season 1 attracted 4.6 million views, though over a longer measurement period from February to June 2024. Even then, the comedy never cracked Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 charts. Despite its limited audience, the show was well received, earning 94% from critics and 88% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Bottom Line
Netflix’s latest report reinforces a familiar pattern: strong early viewership and sustained engagement are crucial for survival. While both The Abandons and The Vince Staples Show had creative ambitions and critical support in different ways, neither generated the long-term audience numbers Netflix appears to require — leading to the end of both series.
