Mike Flanagan’s New “The Exorcist” Film Set for March 2027 Release

A new chapter in The Exorcist franchise is officially on the calendar.

Mike Flanagan’s upcoming The Exorcist movie will be released in theaters on March 12, 2027, Universal Pictures announced Friday. The film stars Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson and Hamnet breakout Jacobi Jupe. The project had originally been expected to debut in March 2026, but production delays pushed the release back by a year.

Flanagan is writing, directing, and producing the film, which is being made for Universal in partnership with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. The studio has described the movie as a “radical new take” on the iconic horror property.

The original The Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin, was released in 1973 and became one of the most influential horror films of all time. It follows a desperate mother who turns to two Catholic priests to save her young daughter from demonic possession. The film was both a critical and commercial success, earning 10 Academy Award nominations and grossing $441 million worldwide.

Universal invested heavily in the franchise in 2021, spending $400 million to secure the rights to a new Exorcist trilogy. The first release under that deal, 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, brought back original star Ellen Burstyn and earned $136 million globally. Flanagan’s upcoming film is set in the same universe as the 1973 classic, but it is not a direct sequel to Believer.

The new movie is produced by David Robinson, Jason Blum, and Flanagan, with Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek serving as executive producers. It is a Blumhouse–Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment production, made in association with Flanagan’s Red Room Pictures.

This project marks Flanagan’s fourth collaboration with Blumhouse. He previously wrote and directed Oculus (2013), Hush (2016), and Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016). His most recent film, 2024’s The Life of Chuck, won the audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

With a new release date set and a high-profile cast attached, Universal is positioning Flanagan’s The Exorcist as a major horror event for spring 2027.
