Speaking on the 200th episode of Working It Out, hosted by fellow comedian Mike Birbiglia, Mulaney shared candid and comedic insights into how his life has changed since marrying Olivia Munn in 2024.
During the conversation, which also touched on Mulaney’s current “Mister Whatever” international tour, the Emmy-winning stand-up revealed that he now plays a significant financial role in Munn’s Vietnamese family, many of whom live in Oklahoma City.
“So Olivia has a large — she’s Vietnamese, and she has a large Vietnamese family in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, of which I am one of the significant financial contributors,” Mulaney said. “For the first 39 years of my life, I supported zero Vietnamese people — probably none — and now I have 10 on the books.”
Mulaney explained that being able to help his in-laws brings him genuine happiness, especially since his own parents — both lawyers — never needed financial support from him. In contrast, Munn’s mother and many of her relatives are Vietnamese refugees who came to the United States with far fewer resources.
“With parents of some success, you can’t really do anything for them,” Mulaney said. “And it brings me great joy to help out, to help and do fun things for Olivia’s family.”
The discussion took a humorous turn when Birbiglia asked whether Mulaney ever wonders if family members are quietly thinking about asking him for money.
“There’s no wonder,” Mulaney joked. “In the back of the mind? You mean the front of the voice? The words coming out of their mouth?”
He went on to contrast the openness around money in Munn’s family with his own upbringing.
“How refreshing, by the way, to be in a goddamn white family, never talk about money at all,” Mulaney said, adding that Munn’s relatives are refreshingly direct. When Birbiglia asked if they openly ask how much money he has, Mulaney replied, “Yeah, I tell them. They love it. They couldn’t like it more.”
Mulaney is currently touring “Mister Whatever” across the U.S., with upcoming dates beginning Jan. 29 in Seattle. Later this spring, he is set to headline the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles as part of Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival.
Mulaney and Munn began dating in 2021, married in July 2024, and are now parents to two children.
