The teaser shows Momoa casually stepping out of his trailer and smoking a cigar. When someone off-camera asks him for comment about playing Lobo, he simply replies, “Finally.” The clip then flashes to a brief scene of Lobo making a fiery on-screen entrance, punctuated by the character’s signature laugh.
The film is set after the events of Superman and stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. The story follows Supergirl as she celebrates her 21st birthday by traveling across the galaxy with her dog, Krypto. Her journey takes a darker turn when a young alien girl asks for her help in avenging her murdered family, leading Supergirl into contact with dangerous figures—among them, Lobo.
The screenplay, written by Ana Nogueira, is based on the acclaimed DC comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely.
The supporting cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, David Krumholtz as Supergirl’s father Zor-El, Emily Beecham as her mother Alura In-Ze, and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, the young alien seeking Kara’s help.
Momoa previously portrayed Aquaman in several films from DC’s earlier cinematic era, but Lobo is a character he has publicly said he was born to play. DC Studios co-head Peter Safran revealed that Momoa had been campaigning for the role for years. According to Safran, when he and Gunn were appointed to lead DC Studios, Momoa immediately texted them one word—“LOBO”—in all caps with multiple exclamation points.
In past interviews, Momoa has said Lobo was always his favorite comic character and felt like a natural fit for his personality and motorcycle-loving image. When his casting was officially announced in December, he confirmed the long-awaited call had finally come.
The film is directed by Craig Gillespie, who has described this version of Supergirl as emotionally complex and very different from Superman. Gillespie said the character carries significant emotional baggage and praised Alcock for embracing that darker, more layered journey.
Supergirl is scheduled to open in international theaters on June 24, 2026, followed by its U.S. release on June 26, 2026.
