According to documents obtained by TMZ, Hailey and Justin sent the legal letter through their attorney, Evan Spiegel, calling out TikTok creator Julie Theis. The letter accuses Theis of “manufacturing a false defamatory narrative” about the couple.
“Your conduct is wrongful, highly damaging, actionable, and exposes you to substantial liability,” the letter reportedly states.
The cease-and-desist centers on a recent TikTok video posted by Theis, in which she discussed celebrity relationships she believes are romanticized because women “tolerate mediocrity, abuse, and do the majority of the emotional and domestic labor in exchange for being in a relationship.”
In the video, Theis specifically referenced Hailey and Justin, claiming their marriage has continued only because Hailey “will tolerate that abuse.” The TikTok also included additional allegations, calling Justin an “addict” and suggesting abuse within the relationship.
The Biebers, who married in 2018, share a 16-month-old son, Jack Blues.
On Saturday, Jan. 10, rumors began circulating online after several TikTok users claimed Hailey had reposted a video that included clips from Theis’ original TikTok, edited together with footage of Hailey and Justin.
Hailey quickly shut down the speculation. In an Instagram Stories post shared the same day, she wrote, “Hey! I know you guys who live on the internet are really bored, but I didn't repost any video speaking on my relationship. Have a beautiful Saturday!”
In a statement shared with People, Theis defended her content, saying her video was “clearly opinion-based commentary about relationship dynamics and power.” She added that attempts to silence such commentary are “concerning” and said, “Disagreement is not defamation, and commentary should not require permission.”
Theis also claimed that since the situation escalated, she has received messages containing explicit threats of physical harm from anonymous accounts. While she did not speculate about who sent the messages, she said intimidation only harms public discourse.
Hailey has addressed rumors and online speculation about her marriage many times over the years. In a May profile with Vogue, she acknowledged that internet chatter about her relationship has not faded, even after seven years of marriage.
“You would think after having a child, people would maybe move on, chill out a little bit,” she said at the time. “But no.”
After the couple marked their seventh wedding anniversary in September, a source previously told PEOPLE that working through challenges has only made their relationship stronger. According to the insider, becoming parents has deepened their bond, with their son Jack now at the center of their lives.
Hailey and Justin got engaged in 2018 and married later that year in a civil ceremony in New York City. They followed it up with a larger wedding celebration in 2019 and welcomed their son in August 2024.
