Griff on Taylor Swift’s Support: ‘She’s Like a Fairy Godmother’

British singer-songwriter Griff is opening up about what it means to have one of the world’s biggest pop stars in her corner: Taylor Swift.

Speaking to People at Warner Music Group’s pre-Grammys party in Los Angeles on Jan. 29, the 25-year-old artist described Swift’s support as “insane,” especially given how much Swift’s music shaped her growing up.

“I grew up listening to her,” Griff said. “Fearless is one of the most important albums to me musically. So the amount of support she’s given me over the years is kind of wild.”

A Memorable Piece of Advice

Griff recalled meeting Swift at the BRIT Awards in 2021, where the global superstar offered advice that stuck.

“She was just very encouraging,” Griff said. “She told me, ‘Make decisions for yourself, don’t listen to the noise, and just do what you want and need to do.’”

The meeting happened shortly before Swift released the re-recorded version of Red, and Griff said watching Swift reclaim her work was inspiring.

From Instagram Shout-Out to Tour Opener

Swift’s support didn’t stop there. In 2023, when Griff released her single “Vertigo,” Swift unexpectedly praised it on Instagram Stories, writing, “Damn Griff I love this one.”

“She never posts, and she really doesn’t have to do that,” Griff said. “So it was incredibly kind and generous. She’s like this fairy godmother that pops up, makes things amazing, and then disappears again.”

Just months later, that encouragement turned into a major career moment. In June 2024, Griff opened for Swift at a London stop on the Eras Tour.

According to Griff, the opportunity began with a chance encounter at a Kendrick Lamar concert in London in 2022.

“We spoke a little, and she mentioned she’d love to have me open for her one day,” Griff said. “I wasn’t even sure I’d heard her correctly. I watched the whole show grinning.”

‘Forever Grateful’

Being personally chosen by Swift, a 14-time Grammy winner, meant everything to the young artist.

“Fearless was the first album I remember falling in love with as a kid,” Griff said. “I’m always inspired by how she can have such a huge career but stay so close to the songwriting.”

Griff also praised Swift’s fans for warmly welcoming her as an opening act. “I’m just forever, eternally grateful to Taylor and to all the Swifties,” she said.

On Swift’s Personal Life

When asked about Swift’s widely rumored upcoming wedding to NFL star Travis Kelce, Griff laughed.

“Oh my God — who isn’t excited?” she said, adding that she’s not expecting an invitation. “I’m just happy to watch from the screen.”

For Griff, Swift’s influence goes far beyond personal encouragement. “She’s clearly raised a whole new generation of artists and songwriters,” she said — and Griff herself is living proof of that impact.
