Games Workshop says Amazon controls timeline for Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe

Games Workshop has finally addressed fan frustration over the long wait for Henry Cavill’s long-planned Warhammer 40,000 screen adaptation, confirming that delivery of the project is firmly in Amazon’s hands.

Cavill — best known for Superman and The Witcher — is attached to star in and executive produce a live-action Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe for Prime Video, following a deal announced more than three years ago between Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios. Since then, however, concrete details have been scarce.

In the company’s latest financial report, Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree acknowledged the prolonged silence and explained why fans should expect a longer wait.

“Our live action endeavour is still in development with our partners: Amazon MGM Studios, Henry Cavill and Vertigo,” Rountree said. “It is the nature of these things to take several years… as with any licensing deal, delivery is not in our control. We leave it to our partners to manage their own businesses.”

While the statement offers little in the way of timelines, it does confirm the project is still alive — and has not disappeared into the Warp.

A massive universe, a complex challenge

The delay is not entirely surprising. Warhammer 40,000 is one of the most expansive and detailed science-fiction settings ever created, featuring countless factions, galaxy-spanning wars, and towering Space Marines battling daemons and alien hordes. Translating that scale into films and television — while keeping budgets manageable — is a formidable task.

Cavill himself has previously described the adaptation as “tricky” and “complex,” but also as a dream project. Speaking last year, he said bringing Warhammer to the screen is unlike anything he has done before, adding that he relishes the challenge of doing justice to the IP’s depth and nuance.

What story the cinematic universe will focus on — and which character Cavill will play — remains unknown.

Progress elsewhere in the Warhammer universe

While the live-action Warhammer 40,000 project remains in development, Rountree did share firmer news on the animated front.

Games Workshop is close to completing a standalone Warhammer Age of Sigmar episode for Prime Video. This fantasy-focused installment follows the positive reception of a Warhammer 40,000 episode featured in Amazon’s animated anthology series Secret Level, which starred Titus from Space Marine 2.

According to Rountree, discussions are already underway about next steps after that success, including potential plans tied to a future Secret Level season.

“After a successful collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios and Blur for Secret Level, we are now meeting with writers to determine our next step,” he said. “We will update you further when we have more significant milestones to share.”

What fans can expect

For now, fans eager to see Cavill’s vision of Warhammer 40,000 will need patience. Games Workshop’s message is clear: the project is moving forward, but the schedule depends on Amazon.

Until then, animated projects like Age of Sigmar and potential future Secret Level episodes may offer the closest glimpse yet of Warhammer brought to life on screen — while the Imperium’s live-action debut continues to take shape behind the scenes.
