The New York Police Department confirmed that a female victim was pronounced dead at the scene in the Brownsville neighborhood. The crash happened just before 7 a.m. at the intersection of Pitkin Avenue and Mother Gaston Boulevard.
According to reports, a sedan struck Underwood as she was crossing the street and dragged her for nearly two blocks before fleeing the scene. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Underwood appeared in seven episodes of All That in 2005, during the show’s final season. The long-running Nickelodeon sketch comedy series aired from 1994 to 2005 and helped launch the careers of many young performers, including Amanda Bynes, Nick Cannon, and Kenan Thompson.
She also had a notable role on Nickelodeon’s animated series Little Bill, where she voiced Fuchsia Glover, the cousin of the main character. Underwood appeared in 23 episodes between 1999 and 2004. The series was created by Bill Cosby and was based on the children’s book series of the same name, following the everyday life and imagination of a 5-year-old boy in Philadelphia.
Born in New York City, Underwood also appeared in the 1999 independent comedy The 24-Hour Woman, directed by Nancy Savoca. The film starred Rosie Perez, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and Patti LuPone.
In addition to her screen work, Underwood provided voice acting for the animated TV movie Santa, Baby and later toured with the stage musical Hairspray.
Police are asking anyone with information about the hit-and-run to come forward as they continue to search for the driver involved.
