Universal Pictures has announced that the 11th main installment in the long-running action series will be released on March 17, 2028. The film is titled Fast Forever, signaling what is expected to be the saga’s final chapter.
Franchise star and producer Vin Diesel shared the news on Instagram, posting a photo of himself alongside his late co-star Paul Walker from the original 2001 film The Fast and the Furious.
“No one said the road would be easy… but it’s ours,” Diesel wrote. “One that has defined us and become our legacy… And a legacy… lasts Forever.”
The new film arrives nearly five years after Fast X debuted in May 2023. That gap marks the longest break between movies since the franchise began more than two decades ago.
Director Louis Leterrier, who stepped in to helm Fast X after Justin Lin exited early in production, is set to return for Fast Forever. The two films were originally planned as a two-part finale, though Diesel has previously suggested the story could wrap up across three final movies instead.
At FuelFest in Pomona, California, Diesel revealed that Universal had hoped to release the finale by April 2027. He said he agreed to return only if three conditions were met: bringing the franchise back to Los Angeles, refocusing on car culture and street racing, and reuniting Dominic Toretto with Brian O’Conner.
That final request presents challenges. Brian was played by Paul Walker, who died in 2013 during production of Furious 7. However, the character remains alive within the series’ story, and Walker’s brothers were previously used as stand-ins, leaving the door open for a possible return.
While no official cast list has been confirmed, most of the Fast X ensemble is expected to return. That includes Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Jordana Brewster, Jason Statham, and Charlize Theron.
Fast X also introduced several new characters, including Jason Momoa’s villain Dante Reyes, along with roles played by Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Alan Ritchson, Scott Eastwood, and Daniela Melchior. Post-credits scenes brought back Gal Gadot as Gisele Yashar and Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs.
One character unlikely to return is John Cena’s Jakob Toretto, whose storyline appeared to end in Fast X. Still, the franchise has a history of surprise comebacks, leaving fans room to speculate.
For now, Fast Forever is officially on the road, with its finish line set for 2028.
