Emma Stone Breaks Meryl Streep’s Oscar Record With Double Bugonia Nominations

Emma Stone has made Oscars history.

On Thursday, Jan. 22, the 37-year-old actress earned two Academy Award nominations for the same film, Bugonia. Stone was nominated for Best Actress for her leading performance in the thriller, and she also received a Best Picture nomination as one of the film’s producers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the achievement makes Stone the youngest woman ever to reach seven Oscar nominations across her career.

The previous record was held by Meryl Streep, who was 38 when she earned her seventh nomination in 1988. Streep, now 76, still holds the overall record for the most acting nominations in Oscar history, with 21 total wins and nominations, including three wins.

In a statement released Jan. 22, Stone thanked the Academy and credited her longtime collaborator Yorgos Lanthimos.

“None of this exists without our director, Yorgos,” Stone said. “I am forever grateful for our creative partnership and friendship.”

She also shared the recognition with her co-star Jesse Plemons and the film’s cast and crew, calling the nominations “a true honor.”

A Career Full of Oscar Recognition

Stone received her first Oscar nomination in 2015 for Best Supporting Actress for Birdman. She later won Best Actress for La La Land and again for Poor Things. Between those wins, she earned another nomination for her supporting role in The Favourite. As a producer on Poor Things, Stone was also nominated for Best Picture.

Other Records Broken This Year

This year’s Oscar nominations brought several historic moments:

• Ryan Coogler’s Sinners received 16 nominations, setting a new record for the most nominations ever earned by a single film. The previous record of 14 was shared by Titanic, La La Land, and All About Eve.

• With his nomination for Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet became the youngest actor since Marlon Brando to earn three Best Actor nominations. Chalamet also received a Best Picture nomination as a producer on the film.

When to Watch the Oscars

Conan O'Brien will return to host the Academy Awards, which will air live on Sunday, March 15, at 7 p.m. ET on ABC and stream on Hulu.

With record-breaking nominations and major milestones, this year’s Oscars are shaping up to be one for the history books.
