Dragon Ball Super Returns After 8 Years With New Sequel ‘The Galactic Patrol’

After more than eight years off the air, Dragon Ball Super is officially returning with a brand-new sequel titled Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol. The long-awaited announcement was made on January 25, 2026, during the Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri event at Makuhari Messe in Japan, held as part of the franchise’s massive 40th anniversary celebration.

The new anime has entered full production and was described by staff as the “pinnacle” of the anniversary project that began back in 2024. It will continue the story directly after the Tournament of Power, picking up where the original anime ended in 2018.

The announcement took place during the opening stage event, “Exclusive Announcements! GENKIDASTAGE Part 1,” with legendary voice actress Masako Nozawa, the voice of Son Goku, appearing alongside executive producer Akio Iyoku.

According to the reveal, Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol adapts the popular “Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc” from the manga. Son Goku and Vegeta team up with the Galactic Patrol—the galaxy’s peacekeeping force—to face a terrifying new threat: Moro, the so-called “Planet-Eater.” The arc promises a galaxy-spanning conflict on a truly “SUPER-scale.”

It was also confirmed that Akira Toriyama is credited with Original Work, Story, and Character Design for the anime, further cementing the sequel’s importance within the franchise.

In addition to the new series, several other major projects were unveiled, including a brand-new game titled AGE1000 and a Dragon Ball Super: Beerus remake TV anime, signaling an ambitious future for the brand.

Before the anime reveal, fans worldwide were treated to a Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary Special Video, released simultaneously across the globe. Produced by Toei Animation and directed by Naoki Miyahara, the commemorative animation brings Toriyama’s iconic color illustrations to life with modern techniques while carefully preserving their original textures and tones. The video visually traces Goku’s growth and journey across the entire Dragon Ball saga.

The special video features a brand-new orchestral theme, “Infinite Future,” composed by Hans Zimmer and arranged by Tom Lucas. Zimmer also shared a message celebrating Dragon Ball’s 40th anniversary, calling the project “an exciting and unforgettable experience” inspired by Toriyama’s artwork.

The anniversary video concludes with the first teaser visual for Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, showing Goku and Vegeta standing side by side in Galactic Patrol uniforms and battle armor, with the organization’s symbol prominently displayed—an image that quickly set social media buzzing.

With a beloved arc finally getting an anime adaptation, Toriyama’s continued creative involvement, and a global anniversary celebration backing it, Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol marks a powerful new chapter for one of anime’s most enduring franchises.
