The singer, 33, appeared on stylist Nicky Campbell’s Gloves Off podcast on Wednesday, Jan. 28, where she reflected on her past red carpet looks. During the conversation, she recalled an awkward incident at the 2015 Grammy Awards involving her outfit — and fellow nominee Mary J. Blige.
At the ceremony, Charli XCX wore a white suit with pink details and a large fluffy pink stole. She described the look as “memorable… for all the wrong reasons,” saying it could have worked better with simpler hair and makeup.
Charli explained that the fluffy stole began shedding during the show. While seated behind Blige, she noticed pink fluff landing on the singer’s outfit. “It was molting everywhere,” Charli said. “Mary J. Blige was sat in front of me, and she was getting covered in pink fluff.”
She admitted she felt too awkward to say anything or remove it. “I didn’t have the heart to tell her or start picking it off her, so I just let it be,” she said.
At Campbell’s suggestion, Charli issued an apology on the podcast. “Mary J. Blige, I’m so sorry for ruining your outfit with my fluff,” she said.
The moment took place during an important year for Charli. The 2015 ceremony marked her first Grammy nominations, earning nods for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Fancy,” her collaboration with Iggy Azalea.
Blige was also nominated that year for Best Dance Recording for “F for You,” a collaboration with Disclosure. She later performed “Stay With Me” at the ceremony alongside Sam Smith.
Charli’s Grammy journey has since come full circle. Last year, she won three awards, including Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Recording Package for Brat, as well as Best Dance Pop Recording for “Von Dutch.”
She remains busy in 2026. Her mockumentary film The Moment was released in theaters on Friday, Jan. 30. She also composed the soundtrack for Emerald Fennell’s upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights, which is set to be released on Friday, Feb. 13.
